Virgin River’s Off-Screen Magic: Real Chemistry, Goofy Challenges, and the Wedding That Moved Even the Toughest to Tears
Thank you for coming—well, thank you for including us! If you’re hooked on Netflix’s Virgin River for its swoon-worthy romance and small-town drama, you might be surprised to learn that the show’s unmistakable “realness” comes straight from the deep off-screen bonds between the cast. Today, Collider pulls back the curtain on the hilarious, heartfelt, and sometimes tearful moments that make the Virgin River cast a true family—and the series so addictive.
It’s no secret that the electric connection between Mel Monroe and Jack Sheridan powers the heart of the show. But what fans don’t always realize is just how genuine that chemistry is between actors Alexandra Breckenridge and Martin Henderson. Breckenridge has confessed, “I think it’s because we both have a similar sense of humor and we’re definitely very, very different people, but our energy mixes really well together.” And judging from the antics on their social media, she’s absolutely right.
One unforgettable moment? Breckenridge’s infamous Ferris wheel video, where she’s heard yelling at Henderson to stop rocking the ride—or else! Their laughter is contagious, especially during the viral tortilla challenge: both fill their mouths with water, and as Alexandra tries to slap Martin into spitting it out, she’s the one who bursts out laughing first, conceding defeat as Martin declares himself the winner. It’s all captured for fans, adding another layer to the pair’s beloved on-screen relationship.
But Alexandra’s antics don’t stop with Martin. She’s known for photo-bombing her castmates, sneaking into their videos, and—most famously—breaking into spontaneous dance parties between takes. Colin Lawrence (Preacher) admits, “When you work with Alex, she always likes to have a dance party between takes. You’ll hear this music turn up and suddenly Alex is breaking out into a little dance. We love having a good time dancing. I’m going to learn our wedding dance!” It’s this spirit that makes every day on set feel like a celebration.
Community is what truly makes Virgin River special. Ben Hollingsworth (Dan Brady) describes it perfectly: “That sense of community is what I think makes this show so great. It really does feel like the small town where everyone has each other’s back. We’re like that when we get on set.” The camaraderie is evident in everything from on-set pranks to full-on cast photo shoots—Annette O’Toole recently shared photos of Trevor Lerner picking up Colin Lawrence and Ben Hollingsworth lifting Annette herself, captioning it, “We got carried away.”
Even the youngest stars, like Kai Bradbury (Denny), can’t help but get in on the fun—his comical photo dumps after each finale showcase a side to him you’d never guess from his often-troubled character.
But the title of “ultimate goof” might just go to Martin Henderson’s own hairstylist Tamara, who dressed up as Martin for Halloween, beard and all! It’s this unity and good spirit that makes the world of Virgin River feel so much like home.
Of course, the drama on-screen is still king. From the moment Mel arrives in Virgin River and steps into Jack’s Bar, the chemistry is undeniable—and so is the rollercoaster romance that follows, full of kidnappings, heartbreaks, and passionate reunions. By Season 6, fans were clamoring for Mel and Jack to finally tie the knot in an epic wedding to rival any on TV.
Showrunner Patrick Sean Smith knew the stakes: “To go six seasons and build to this epic milestone for this couple, that wedding had to be big. It not only had to be big, but it also had to include the town—or at the very least, the most important characters.” The challenge? Balancing intimacy with grandeur, all while capturing the cozy, nature-filled vibe that defines the show.
Alexandra Breckenridge thought the wedding would be “quite small and intimate by a riverside somewhere,” but Smith and his team blended Pinterest perfection with rustic charm—a rose-petal cabin, a gorgeously decorated barn, and even a private moment for Mel and Jack on horseback by the river. The wedding décor honored nature, with rocks and flowers representing the town’s spirit and landscape.
On the big day, Martin Henderson was overwhelmed. “When [Alexandra] as Mel finally came down the aisle, I was so overcome with emotion from Jack’s perspective, just because this is the woman he’s going to marry, that he loves so much. I couldn’t help but feel everything the characters have been through over the seasons, how much they meant to each other… If I’d gotten my first look at you at the altar, I don’t think I’d have remembered my vows.” The tears in his eyes? 100% real.
The party didn’t stop there. Ben Hollingsworth told Netflix, “It’s like a big party, kind of, on and off set.” Still, anxiety lingered—the show is filmed in Vancouver, notorious for its unpredictable weather. As the big day approached, disaster seemed one rain cloud away. “I told everybody I prayed to Taylor Swift,” Smith jokes. Miraculously, the skies cleared, the doves flew, and the wedding went off without a hitch.
Virgin River stands out as one of those rare shows where the cast’s off-screen love and unity shines through every scene. The laughter, the mischief, the tears—they’re all real, and they’re what keeps fans coming back for more.
