Yes, it’s true; a familiar face has returned to The Young and the Restless! This time, though, we’re not talking about someone in front of the cameras, but behind them. Jill Farren Phelps, who served as the show’s executive producer from 2012 through 2016 is, according to Soap Opera Network, back as producer, with Josh Griffith still serving as executive producer and headwriter.
It’s far from the first time the two have worked together on the show, as Griffith was also named headwriter for the show back in 2012 when Phelps took over the showrunner role from Maria Arena Bell. (Who, much like Griffith is doing now, served as executive producer and headwriter during her tenure.)
Phelps first moved over to Young & Restless after over a decade at General Hospital and following a brief foray as showrunner of TeenNick’s limited run primetime soap, Hollywood Heights. During her tenure at the CBS soap, she brought over a number of faces she’d worked with before, like Hollywood Heights stars Hunter King (ex-Summer), Robert Adamson (ex-Noah) and Kelli Goss (ex-Courtney).
Steve Burton made the jump from General Hospital to play Young & Restless‘ Dylan (who turned out to be Paul and Nikki’s son) in 2013, while Jason Thompson also switched Port Charles out for Genoa City to play Billy Abbott shortly before Phelps’ exit.
Young & Restless nabbed two Daytime Emmy’s for Outstanding Drama series while Phelps helmed the show, while at the same time, she also oversaw some pretty drastic set changes. This, folks will probably remember, was back when Sharon burned down the Newman ranch (which was only recently returned to how it was before) and the Chancellor mansion’s… blue period.
While we don’t expect any more set changes, who knows? Maybe the return of the Griffith/Phelps combination will rack up another Emmy or two!
