The Bold and the Beautiful’s Sean Kanan opened up to fans about the power of perseverance and tenacity in an inspiring social media post.
The Bold and the Beautiful’s Sean Kanan has a lot going on. As Deacon, he’s been very reactive lately, helping Sheila since she lost another toe to the nefarious (and presumed dead) Luna. However, while the craziness around Los Angeles in the show continues to unfold, Kanan presses on in the real world. At an inspiring TED Talk, he explained that he once had a blood clot that nearly cost him his life. Now, he’s revealed another health issue and updated his fans on social media about it.
He Felt Humiliated
Kanan shared a video of himself jumping rope on Instagram with the Run DMC song “Rock Box” playing in the background. He wrote, “One year ago I underwent surgery for a full and massive tear of my supraspinatus on my left shoulder. I could barely move my arm and sometimes had to have my wife help me get dressed. It was humiliating and began permeating into other areas.”
He explained that orthopedic sports medical surgeon, Dr. Nima Mehran, doubted he could perform the necessary surgery and even questioned whether it would work, so Kanan needed to prepare himself that it couldn’t be done. “Many people advised me against the operation and warned that it could make things worse,” he wrote, adding the shocking, “I didn’t share what was going on in my head, but I was deeply troubled I would never recover my mobility and strength.”
Words To Live by
The actor further explained that he took a chance, and the operation succeeded, but he still has a way to go. Jumping rope was an example of something his injury prevented him from doing, but now he’s getting closer to being fully healed. “This experience has taught me to stay in the present, focusing on the process and not the result,” he explained.
Kanan added that this month marked the fourth year of his sobriety, and encouraged people who feel their problems are insurmountable are not alone. He stated that difficulty breeds growth, and advised his fans to “ignore that voice that tells you to quit, to settle and accept. Never validate the seductive words, ‘what if you fall?’ They come cloaked in the disguise of concern, but they are like the song of the Sirens luring you into the rocks of defeat and mediocrity.”
He also advised everyone to embrace “tenacity, perseverance, and triumph, and said they should change the question in their minds to, “What if you fly?” General Hospital and former B&B star, Rick Hearst, gleefully chimed in with, “Get it!!!” (Find out about Kanan’s blood oil change.)
