Mark Your Calendars – The Wedding Season is Here!
It’s official, Virgin River fans: Season 6 is now streaming on Netflix! After a season filled with ups and downs, wedding bells are finally ringing for Mel (played by Alexandra Breckenridge) and Jack (Martin Henderson). Season 6 is all about building up to their wedding, filled with all the pre-wedding milestones we’ve come to expect — dress shopping, bachelor/bachelorette parties, rehearsal dinners, and more! But as always with this beloved series, the path to the altar won’t be entirely smooth. Showrunner Patrick Sean Smith promises plenty of drama and surprises along the way.
“We’re trying to hit all the milestones,” Smith explains. “But there’s more than one last-minute wrench thrown into the mix for our favorite couple.” But fans can rest easy — wedding bells will be ringing, and the much-awaited celebration of Mel and Jack’s love is just around the corner.
What’s New in Virgin River Season 6?
So what can fans expect from this season? First of all, we know the timeline picks up a few months after the Christmas-themed episodes in Season 5. The town is in the middle of springtime, which, as Smith hints, brings plenty of “growth and change” for the characters. But just like the seasons in Virgin River, there’s always something unexpected just around the corner.
“We know that babies and wedding bells are never off the table on Virgin River,” Smith teases, hinting that Mel and Jack will take the next steps in their journey toward parenthood. On top of that, the couple will be busy working on turning Lilly’s (Lynda Boyd) old farm into their dream home. After purchasing the property in Season 5, this season will show them making it truly their own. There will be big changes, fresh starts, and lots of new challenges to tackle together.
But of course, as with any season of Virgin River, things are never perfect. There will be obstacles, new tensions, and a few secrets that could threaten the peace of the small town.
New Cast Members Join the Series
In addition to the core group of beloved characters, Season 6 will also feature some exciting new faces. Jessica Rothe (known for Happy Death Day) and Callum Kerr (from ONE PIECE) will join the cast as young versions of Mel’s parents, Sarah and Everett. The flashback storyline, set in the 1970s, will explore their passionate and adventurous love story.
Sarah is portrayed as a witty, free-spirited activist who isn’t interested in the conventional life expected of young women in the 1970s. She meets Everett, a handsome musician who is just as free-spirited. The two quickly form a deep bond, one that transcends their differences and sets them on an unforgettable journey together.
“Getting to look at a different romantic relationship, but still in the world of Virgin River, is exciting,” says Smith. Fans who love Mel and Jack’s slow-burn romance can look forward to seeing this new couple navigate their own love story, with all its complications and joys.
Alongside the new additions, the main cast will continue to delight us with their performances. Breckenridge and Henderson return as Mel and Jack, of course, with Tim Matheson, Annette O’Toole, Colin Lawrence, Benjamin Hollingsworth, Zibby Allen, Sarah Dugdale, Marco Grazzini, Mark Ghanimé, Kai Bradbury, and Kandyse McClure all reprising their roles.
What’s Next for Preacher, Brady, and Kaia?
In addition to Mel and Jack’s wedding drama, there will also be some “new directions” for characters like Preacher (Lawrence), Brady (Hollingsworth), and Kaia (McClure). Preacher is still grappling with the aftermath of his past actions, and his journey is far from over. Brady, meanwhile, will be volunteering at the Virgin River fire station under the guidance of Fire Chief Kaia, who has her own complicated history with Preacher.
“This season, we’ll be surprised by some returning favorites from the past,” Smith adds, hinting that some familiar faces may pop up again.
A Mystery Character to Shake Things Up
One of the most intriguing new characters in Season 6 is Mel’s biological father, Everett Reid. Everett has been carrying a long-held secret, and his appearance will add new layers of complexity to Mel’s family story. His arrival is sure to raise questions and create emotional moments, especially as he gets to know the woman Mel has become.
Behind the Scenes – The Magic of Virgin River
As always, Virgin River continues to be filmed in the stunningly beautiful Vancouver, Canada. Despite the challenges of the pandemic, the cast and crew reunited with immense enthusiasm, ready to continue bringing this small-town drama to life. Showrunner Patrick Sean Smith is thrilled to be back, and he acknowledges the love and dedication the cast and crew have for the series. “We all love the show, we love the fans, and we love getting to work together. I think that comes across on-screen,” Smith says.
It’s also a major season for Martin Henderson, who is set to make his directorial debut this season. Fans can look forward to seeing his talents behind the camera as well as in front of it.
