Inside Netflix’s Ransom Canyon real-life filming locations as ‘Yellowstone and Virgin River hybrid’ debuts

Western drama Ransom Canyon has been likened to both Paramount’s Yellowstone and as well as Netflix’s heartwarming series Virgin River.

Netflix’s latest offering Ransom Canyon has arrived but where was this captivating series filmed?

Netflix has been churning out original shows that echo the success of other major hits over the past few months.

Its recent medical drama Pulse has drawn comparisons to the legendary Grey’s Anatomy, and now Ransom Canyon is being likened to Paramount+’s Yellowstone.

The 10-episode drama got the official nod in December 2023 and made its full debut on Netflix on Thursday, April 17.

Starring Las Vegas’ Josh Duhamel and Friday Night Lights’ Minka Kelly, Ransom Canyon offers a glimpse into the lives of three of the town’s largest ranches, including the ups and downs of their complex families.

Where was Ransom Canyon filmed?
While the town of Ransom Canyon is central to the Netflix series, it doesn’t actually exist. However, creator April Blair drew inspiration from real towns across New Mexico, which served as the actual filming locations.

The cast and crew spent much of the 15-month production in both Albuquerque and Santa Fe, where real-life ranches were used for filming. So, despite the Texas setting, filming didn’t occur there.

Blair, who’s the talent behind hits like Wednesday and All American, told Tudum: “Most of New Mexico is adobe architecture, and there’s this one little old mining town in northern New Mexico very close to the Texas border called Las Vegas, ironically, that just looks like an old Texas town.

“It has all the old turn of the century architecture and storefronts.”

Ransom Canyon was shot at several real locations, including the Blame Her Ranch in Ribera and the Bonanza Creek Ranch in Santa Fe.

Actor Jack Schumacher confided to Distractify: “It’s a really gorgeous area. And when you’re out riding a horse through this scenic ranch, it’s easy to sort of feel like you’re really there with the characters.”

Besides these real-life backdrops, Netflix’s Alburquerque studio complex, boasting a whopping 12 sound stages, played a pivotal role during the show’s production.

Ransom Canyon is available to watch on Netflix.
